Aromatherapy as it is today, began with the Egyptians who used the method of infusion to extract oils from aromatic plants. These plants were used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. Around the same time, ancient Chinese civilizations were also using aromatics. Aromatherapy has also been used in Indian Ayurveda traditional medicine which makes use of herbs as well as aromatic massages. The ancient Greeks acquired most their medical knowledge from the Egyptians and used it to further their own discoveries.
With the increase in health care costs, many are turning to nature to find the answers to ailments and health issues.
The hemp plant, domesticated 6000 years ago in China, produces more than 400 organic compounds. The two main groups of molecules with bio-active properties found in hemp are terpenes and cannabiniods - CBD being a molecule of the latter.
Cannabinoids are compounds that can influence functioning of the human nervous system. The hemp plant bio-synthesizes more than 60 of them. The major cannabinoids are THC, CBD, CBG and they differ in their chemical structure and action.
Cannabidiol, or CBD is one of the most abundant cannabinoids found in hemp. CBD is thought too have many therapeutic applications and helps to unwind. While beneficial for well being, CBD doesn't have the psychoactive properties of its more famous cousin THC, and should not be confused for THC.
